Pruning in the vineyard is the chore this time of year. It is a darn if you - darn if you don't situation. The weather has been unusually warm and the daffodils are trying to bloom. If we prune too early and the vines start to bud, then a late spring freeze can delete the 2012 harvest. If we don't and wait for the weather to get cold and it doesn't, then we may be pruning after bud break to get it all accomplished. I joke with my vineyard foreman that he will not have to wear the stilts when he grows up. A six (6) foot high trellis wire and a 5' 3" pruner is a challenge.
